The Sharjah Electricity, Gas and Water Authority (SEWGA) ensures that the drinking water it supplies to residents conforms to the standards of the World Health Organisation (WHO), a top official has said.

Saeed Sultan Al Suwaidi, Chairman of SEGWA, said up to 650 samples of water are tested every month at the authority’s laboratory. In 2020 so far, 8,007 water samples have been tested at the laboratory.

The samples are collected from 55 points across the emirate.

Faisal Al Serkal, Director of the Water and Desalination Plants Department, water is tested at every step of its journey from desalination to distribution.

“Our laboratories are equipped with the latest equipment and well-trained cadres to ensure the quality of water in areas of Sharjah around the clock,” he said.

Fatima Al Amiri, a laboratory technician at the SEWGA, explained that the laboratory also tests groundwater in wells to ensure safety.

How to lodge complaints

Al Amiri said there are “multiple channels” to facilitate complaints or observations about water quality: Via the SEWGA call centre (991) or via the Sharjah Municipality hotline.
