Dubai: The Cyber Investigation Department at Dubai Police has prevented cyber thefts worth Dh9 million since the beginning of 2015 up until June 23.

Major General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant to the Dubai Police Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs, said there were 901 cases of cyber crime in 2015 until date.

“Overall, crimes in the UAE are decreasing, and so are cyber crimes,” he said.

In 2014, the Cyber Investigation Department helped prevent cyber thefts worth Dh28 million in 1,576 cases recorded.

He said the cyber crimes included stealing, fraud, extortion and blackmail, impersonating others, stealing phone services and using them unlawfully, phishing for the purpose of fraud, hacking, libel and slander, security breaches, and violation of intellectual property rights.

“Dubai Police are ready to deal with all types of cyber crime thanks to trained and qualified teams that work at the department. The team keeps up with the latest technological developments and works with officers in their field across the world to stay informed of the latest trends.” Maj Gen Al Mansouri said.

He said there are 58 people working in the department, in addition to 45 who are studying abroad to meet the future needs of the department in the fight against cyber crime. Of the 45, 20 are studying digital evidence.

Major Hamad Juma, Acting Director of the Department of Digital Evidence in the General Department of Criminal Evidence, said the department had prepared 890 technical reports during the first quarter of 2015 that were used by the public prosecution and court.

The department inspected 6,352 pieces of digital evidence in the same period, which included computers, mobile phones, videos, networks, video and audio files.

In 2014, the department issued 2,687 technical reports after examining 2,868 pieces of digital evidence.

Major Juma said there is a constant increase in the use of digital evidence, as people are becoming more and more dependent on the use of technology in all aspects of their lives.
