TUNIS - Tunisia was classified by the United Nations Organisation (UNO) index on "e-government" as leader of the African and Maghreb countries and 66th at the world scale, out of a total of 192 countries, climbing 58 ranks compared with 2009 (124th).

Entitled "2010 UN Global E-Government Readiness Survey," the Index evaluates the degree of utilisation by public administration of information and communication technologies (ICTs) with a view to improving their services.

The UN Index is established on the basis of several criteria, mainly the use of Internet, telecommunications infrastructure and human resources.

The aim behind this rating is to consolidate the credibility of governmental initiatives among citizens, more particularly in this period of economic crisis.

In Africa, Tunisia is ahead of South Africa (97th), Mauritius (77th) and Zambia (143rd). At the Arab and Maghreb scale, Tunisia has overtaken such countries as Oman (82nd), Egypt (86th), Lebanon (93rd), Libya (114th), Morocco (126th), Algeria (131st), Syria (133rd), Mauritania (157th) and Yemen (164th).

It appears from the same Index that Tunisia is better rated than China (72nd).
