The first electric bus will arrive in the Egyptian coastal governorate of Alexandria within a few days from China as part of the tender made by the Public Transport Authority with a Chinese company to buy 15 electric buses, a top official at the Egyptian environment ministry said.

The $228,000-worth bus is set to arrive on Thursday or Friday, Mostafa Murad told state-run news agency MENA.

The bus will be tested for 3 months and the other 14 buses will be purchased based on the results of the test, Murad added.

He noted that electric buses help reduce emissions and exhausts that pollute the air, pointing out that the cost of these buses will be high at the beginning, but it will save operating and maintenance expenses in comparison with buses run by diesel.

He also indicated that a conference regarding electric cars will be held next October in collaboration with the ministries of planning, finance, and interior.
