KUWAIT, July 13 (KUNA) -- Volume of the issued Kuwaiti currency, both banknotes and coins, had amounted in the end of last year to KD 804.9 million, including 791.1 million in banknotes.
The 20 dinar notes were predominant, with 477.6 million, followed by the 10 dinar notes, 240.6 million, and then the five dinar notes, that amounted to 36.6 million dinars.
Overall volume of the one dinar notes reached 24.4 million, the half dinar, 6.9 million, and the 250-fils notes, five million.
Total 100-fils coins amounted to 5.7 million, the 50 fils to 4.4 million, the 20 fils to two million, the 10 fils to one million, while the smallest coin, the 50 fils, amounted to 600,000 dinars.
The issue and circulation of the Kuwaiti currency notes and coins are exercised solely and exclusively by the Central Bank of Kuwait.
There have been five issues of the national currency since 1961.
The fifth issue was placed into circulation effective April 3, 1994. It is the current circulating currency of the State of Kuwait with high level technology utilizing technical features.
On August 2, 1990, all banking services were stopped due to the Iraqi invasion. After liberating Kuwait, the fourth issue of Kuwaiti currency was carried out on March 24, 1991, with new and different colors in order to prevent the occupation power from using the stolen Kuwaiti banknotes.
