AMMAN - The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority has allocated 250 dunums of land for the University of Jordan (UJ) to establish a branch in the Red Sea port city, UJ President Khalid Karaki said.
The university's branch will open its doors to students for the 2009-2010 scholastic year offering five faculties: Business administration, IT, marine sciences, languages and tourism and hospitality, Karaki told Al Rai newspaper in an interview published on Saturday.
Karaki added that the university plans to develop the Aqaba branch to include a faculty of medicine and an affiliated hospital serving area residents.
Earlier, Karaki announced that UJ will build an additional campus in Amman, with some existing faculties to be transferred to other locations across the capital.
The university currently offers 97 programmes at the master's level and 31 PhD programmes, in addition to 16 specialised programmes in medicine for 61,338 students at its campus in the capital.
UJ is also planning to introduce new programmes at the master's and doctoral levels in management, English literature, Islamic sciences, nutrition and others, Karaki noted.
The university is also working on introducing new programmes at the master's level such as Arabic-French translation, European studies, disaster management and computer engineering.
