Dubai: The eastern section of Umm Suqeim Road that connects Al Khail Road with Shaikh Zayed Road is being turned into an expressway, complete with service roads and two dual three-lane flyovers.
The upgrade, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year, is part of the expanding network of the Parallel Roads project.
The 2.5km expressway will ease traffic and help residents of Al Barsha, Al Khail and Al Quoz, who currently experience long traffic jams.
“The project is part of the Parallel Roads corridor improvements. The aim of the project is to link the east and west parallel roads from Al Quoz to Al Barsha and to provide free traffic movement through Umm Suqeim Road for the traffic movement to Al Khail Road over the two junctions crossing with the parallel roads,” said Maitha Bin Udai, CEO of the RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency.
Being built at a cost of Dh168 million the project not only involves converting the road into a five-lane expressway for a 2.5km stretch but also includes building three pedestrian bridges.
“Work on the project started last September and is continuing in full swing and the facilities will be ready for the public by the end of this year. There will be service lanes on each side of the road apart from five lanes on the main road, which will separate local movement from the main road and help reduce congestion in the area,” added Maitha.
Another major roadworks project that will be completed by the end of this year is the phase 3 Parallel Roads at Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT).
Being built at a cost of Dh450 million, the project forms an extension of the Western Parallel Road stretching within the JLT district and linking the sprawling property developments of Emaar and Nakheel with Shaikh Zayed Road and Mohammad Bin Zayed Road.
The project comprises the construction of seven main bridges providing free traffic movement from and to JLT, and the improvement of key road networks in the neighbourhood to accommodate the growing traffic movement in the area and link it with the main roads in the neighbourhood. The project also includes construction of an expressway linking Shaikh Zayed Road with Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road.
