KAMPALA, May 9 (Reuters) - Uganda's shilling

clawed back early losses on Friday, helped by the central bank draining shillings from the money market, traders said. Demand from foreign banks for dollars held in Uganda and excess shilling liquidity piled early pressure on the local currency, said Robert Mpuuga, a trader at Housing Finance Bank. The shilling fell as much as 0.6 percent to 2,530/2,540 before pulling back to 2,520/2,530. Commercial banks quoted the local currency at 2,515,/2,525 at Thursday's close. "After the central bank came in with a seven-day repo we saw the shilling self-correct and reverse its earlier losses," Mpuuga said. The central Bank of Uganda (BoU) mopped up 285 billion shillings worth of excess liquidity. The local currency has held its ground against the greenback so far this year, supported by subdued demand for dollars from local corporate clients and strong inflows from foreign investors buying Ugandan government debt. Next week, the Bank of Uganda will sell 120 billion shillings worth of Treasury bills. Traders said a further fall in yields might signal easing foreign demand and therefore slower dollar inflows "I expect liquidity to be short next week after this mop-up and then we also have mid-month tax payments," said a trader at a leading commercial bank. "We're likely to see the shilling range-bound between 2,515-2,530." UGX Spot Rate....................
