With a view to increasing awareness of investment opportunities and partnerships with foreign parties to encourage the creation of snail farming projects, the Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries (UTAP) held on Friday in Tunis, a workshop on opportunities to promote this sector, especially among young agricultural promoters.
Mr. Youssef Kachouti, UTAP' National Executive Board Member UTAP said that the number of projects of snail farming projects in Tunisia does not exceed the 20 projects, the majority are small projects with an average investment exceeding 100 dinars.
Several projects were implemented in partnership with Italian promoters, especially that Tunisia offers a suitable climate for this type of production.
He also noted that efforts are currently focused on promoting this sector particularly among university graduates and promoting exports in order to create job opportunities.
The investment in this sector will boost Tunisia's capacities to respond to the international demand, particularly the European market which represents 70% of the global demand.
It should be noted that the volume of global consumption of all species of snails is estimated at about 425,000 tons.
Presentations on the biological and physiological characteristics of snails were on the menu, in addition to the incentives provided by the agency to promote investment in agriculture (APIA) to young entrepreneurs during all stages of the project.
