DOHA: Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways have launched joint fares to destinations in India, Far East and the US to offer convenient flights and connections to passengers from Doha, Jose Thachil, district sales manager at Singapore Airlines, said yesterday.
Speaking to the media, Jose said that under a recent agreement with Qatar's national carrier, passengers bound for Bombay, Cochin and Trivandrum can fly on Qatar Airways from Doha and onwards to Singapore and then to the Far East on Singapore Airlines. These passengers, he revealed, will have to pay about QR300 to avail of a stopover at any of the three Indian cities over the regular airfares between Doha and Singapore or destinations in the Far East, where the airline operates. They can also travel directly between Singapore and Doha once Qatar Airways opens the route later this year and fly to destinations in India on Singapore Airlines for a slightly higher fare, he added.
In addition, passengers bound for New York from Doha will have the facility of flying to Frankfurt on Qatar Airways and onwards to the US on Singapore Airlines. He explained that the Qatar Airways flight lands at Flughafen, Frankfurt, at 6.30am while the Singapore Airlines flight departs the German city for JFK at 8am. Passengers from Doha also have the option of flying to Dubai on Qatar Airways and onwards to Singapore and destinations beyond, such as Australia, with Singapore Airlines, under the joint fares agreement. In Qatar, Singapore Airlines is represented by its General Sales Agent (GSA) Overseas Travel Bureau.
S Zainul Aljuneid, general manager, Gulf, at Singapore Airlines, said that the two carriers are also expected to shortly finalise an agreement under which passengers from Doha can travel to Singapore on the direct flight of Qatar Airways, when launched, and onwards on Singapore Airlines, using the joint fare system. Such fares, he said, are economical compared to those charged according to individual sectors. In these cases, the fare is calculated from Doha to the destination and back and hence, is lower, he explained.
Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines has offered Singapore Stopover packages for prices starting from US$28 per day for hotel accommodation. Certain expatriates, such as Indian citizens, can avail of a free, 96-hour visa-on-arrival at the Changi International Airport provided they hold a ticket for any onward destination. Complimentary sight-seeing, such as those on a special bus which takes travellers around all major tourist attractions in Singapore, are also available, he said. The bus makes its first round at 9am and the service is available till late night the official added.
