Sharjah: The family of a 30-year-old woman who died after a Caesarian section are accusing the hospital of negligence.
Areej Haider Fouad died on Friday morning 14 days after giving birth via Caesarean section to her first-born at Al Qasimi Hospital. Her family has filed cases with Al Hira police station and the medical authorities The case is being investigated by a committee formed by the hospital administration and chaired by Dr Safiya Saif Al Khajeh, medical director and consultant paediatrician, said Dr Arif Al Nooryani, the hospital’s chief executive.
“It’s the work of the higher medical authorities or the courts to say whether or not a medical error was committed,” Dr Al Nooryani said.
If medical staff are found guilty they will face appropriate punishment, he added. This could involve the criminal courts. The report will be ready on Monday, Dr Al Nooryani said. The deceased woman’s father, Haider Fouad, confirmed that he has filed a case with Al Hira police station accusing the hospital of negligence. The case is under investigation. Areej is understood to have died from a blood infection, according to her family.
She was admitted to hospital on August 21 and stayed five days after her delivery, after which doctors discharged her and her baby.
Three days later she suffered severe abdominal pain and was rushed back to the hospital, where she died on Friday. Her baby girl is doing well.
Areej developed septicaemia, according to an initial medical report.
Meanwhile, Sharjah Public Prosecution has ordered that Areej’s body be moved to the forensic laboratory for a post-mortem.
