Abu Dhabi: The failure to construct metal scaffolding according to engineering standards could have been one of the causes of the Western Region mosque roof collapse which took the life of an Asian man on Saturday evening.
When asked by the Public Prosecution on the reasons for the collapse which has injured 17 other men, the head of the Building Licenses and Urban Planning Council at the Western Region Municipality replied that the scaffolding was to blame, saying it could not bear the weight of the concrete being cast to refurbish the roof of the mosque and the workers who were standing on top of the structure during the time of the incident.
Gulf News previously reported that a committee has been set up to investigate the causes of the accident as ordered by the Western Region Municipality.
The engineering consultant responsible for the mosque’s refurbishing project cited that flaws in the metal used for the scaffolding caused the accident. The expert also stated that the contractor did not abide by the notes given by the municipality inspector when he examined the construction materials prior to starting the project.
