Lattakia, (SANA)- A Russian aid aircraft carrying various medical supplies arrived Sunday at al-Basel international airport in Lattakia.

Lattakia Health Director Wafik Darwish said the plane brought 44 tons of medical supplies, and that these supplies have been transported to warehouses from which they will be transported to provinces according to each area's needs.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had directed the Russian Health Ministry to send medical aid to Syria, according to the Kremlin's press secretary Dmitry Piskov.

Piskov announced in a statement on Saturday that President Putin, following a phone call with President Bashar al-Assad last Thursday, took a decision to send medical assistance to Syria "in light of the difficult health situation" in the country.

He said the medical aid will include medicine, medical supplies and equipment for urgent relief services, noting that the necessary directions in this regard were given to the Russian Health Ministry.
