Dubai:The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) sees the Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) as the frontline in the fight for better health of the population, the chief of the Authority said on Tuesday.

Qadi Saeed Al Murooshid, Director-General of the DHA, said the Authority recently acquired land in Jumeirah to build a state-of-the-art primary healthcare centre. “We will close down the Umm Suqeim PHC, because it is one of the oldest and is very small, and build a much bigger facility. The construction of this centre will begin in December,” he said.

“We are paying strong emphasis to PHCs,” he said. Next year the DHA will also begin construction of another PHC in Al Warqa. “Our aim is to provide high level primary healthcare services across all areas of the Emirate,” he said.

The DHA presently has 14 heathcare centres.

Al Murooshid said a new Al Barsha Centre costing Dh70 million is completed and will cater to a population of 60,000 people. It will be operational by mid-August this year, the Director-General said. “The population of Al Barsha is growing and we wanted to ensure we provide healthcare facilities for them,” he said.

Hospital Build show In another development, the new Dubai Diabetes Centre has won the award for the Best Physical Environment at the Hospital Build and Infrastructure Middle East Exhibition and Congress. Hospital Award started on Tuesday at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The Congress was inaugurated by Abdul Rahman Mohammad Al Owais, Acting Minister of Health. “The Dubai Diabetic Centre represents a unique example of a friendly physical environment for adult and paediatric patients. This design provides a child-friendly environment and is appealing for adults,” said Al Murooshid.

He said the new centre at the Second of December Street will be operational by mid-August this year.

Once it is operational, the existing diabetes centre in Latifa Hospital will be shut down. The new centre is about four times the size of the current centre.
