KUWAIT: Only 56 percent of the work being carried out by the Ministry of Public Work (MPW) on the KD 29 million First Ring Road project has been completed since the project contract was signed five years ago, revealed a senior MPW official on Sunday.

During a tour of the areas where work on the major construction project is taking place, project supervisor Mohammad Abadine told Al-Qabas that whilst the completion date had originally been scheduled for the middle of 2011, a number of problems, including the limited experience of Arab laborers working on the project, means that this may be delayed.

Abadine revealed that the total cost of the work completed to date has come to KD 16 million, further revealing that two more pedestrian bridges, the fourth and fifth to be built as part of the project, will be completed and opened for use shortly, both near the Sheraton Roundabout.

The senior official also revealed that upgrading the rainwater drainage network in the vicinity of the First Ring Road had also been incorporated into the work to be performed as part of the project. He stressed that the project team had avoided open excavation work wherever possible in order to prevent the obstruction of traffic.
