While driving licenses continue to be renewed and issued electronically for drivers on Article 20 (household drivers), security sources told Al-Rai that the service “will be available to everyone within a few days, and that renewal will be available for those who wish to do it 6 months before the license expires, not a month as was the case earlier.” The sources told Al-Rai that “the aim of the trend, to open the renewal six months before the expiry of the license, is to limit the largest number of driving licenses to residents, and issue them to those who meet the conditions, and withdraw them from those who are not eligible.”

The daily explained “the General Traffic Department will receive requests to renew driving licenses (online) during the current week or at the beginning of the New Year at the latest, after the completion of the automated link with the competent authorities, to ‘confiscate’ the licenses granted to residents who do not meet the conditions.” Sources stated the GTD had “stopped the electronic renewal of licenses two weeks ago, and allowed only Article 20 drivers to renew, while other professions are received by traffic departments which witness a severe congestion.”
