Muscat - Keen to bolster its ability to respond to water supply contingencies in a timely and effective manner, Oman Power and Water Procurement company (OPWP) -- the sole procurer of power and water capacity in the Sultanate -- is weighing for the first time the procurement of barge-mounted desalination units for temporary deployment along the coast. At the same time, the state-run utility -- a wholly owned subsidiary of Nama Group -- is exploring the feasibility of acquiring portable land-based plant for rapid deployment in inland areas impacted by any potential potable water supply crunch.
Given the novel nature this procurement exercise, OPWP last week invited Expressions of Interest (EoI) from qualified international companies seeking details of their expertise in supplying and operating barge-mounted desalination plants, with an option to also provide land-based mobile portable desalination units.
