Oil And Gas Discovery At North West Gemsa Concession In Egypt’s Eastern Desert
A consortium of companies exploring the North West Gemsa concession in Egypt’s Eastern Desert announced a new oil and gas discovery in the Kareem sandstone formation on 3 October. The Al-Amir SE-1 well tested 41° API oil and gas at a sustained rate of 3,388 b/d and 4.25mn cfd, using a 64/64 inch choke. The well is currently being completed as a potential producer, after encountering operational difficulties. The concession is operated by Greece’s Vegas Oil and Gas, which holds a 50% interest, with Circle Oil holding 40% and Premier Oil holding 10%. The concession covers an area of around 400 sq km and lies about 300km southeast of Cairo in the onshore Gulf of Suez area. Premier, which farmed into the concession in 2004, announced a discovery in the South Gharib formation the following year (MEES, 25 April 2005)
