MUSCAT -- Khalil bin Abdullah al Khonji, Chairman of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI), presided over the second Economic Board meeting that were recently held at their offices in the Central Business District (CBD).

They discussed the importance of organising and hosting economic conferences in the Sultanate, so as to have a clear and specific vision, especially in the case of conferences organised by the private sector.

They noted that they have to meet outlined objectives for the development of economic action and standardisation efforts, as well as to attain set goals and recommendations that can be followed up later with authorities concerned.

In this context, Al Khonji pointed out, the conference industry has become an important adjunct to world trade and the economy and is no less important than the exhibition industry.

General and specialised conferences also contribute to tourism; as is often the case, well-known personalities are invited, together with trade delegations and media from different countries. The Sultanate is witnessing an increase in the number of these conferences and forums, which gives urgent rise for private sector parties concerned to act in organising and scheduling them.

Other factors discussed included the economic vision of the Sultanate and the importance of clarifying and developing it in line with local, regional and global conditions, as well as the important part and contribution the private sector has to play for the development of the economic sector.

OCCI's Economic Board seeks to strengthen the partnership between the government and private sector and to develop objectives that help to further develop the private sector and support and enhance its contributions to the national economy.

It was agreed to form a working group, comprising of members of the Board, to develop a set of themes on economic issues that private sector organisations could discuss with the government bodies concerned.
