AMMAN -- Names of the second group of students involved in riots that took place in Karak's Mutah University in April this year will be announced early next month, a vice dean said on Thursday.
Suleiman Al Sarayrah, the university's vice dean for student affairs, said the investigation committees have almost finished looking into the matter and are mulling the expulsion of more than 30 students and warning 15 to 20 other.
Last month, the university's administration expelled seven students and suspended nine others for three academic semesters, for their involvement in the same riots.
Those who were suspended for three semesters also incurred a JD250 fine each, and some of them lost their scholarships.
Sarayrah noted that the final decision on the second group of students will be announced on August 5, after students finish the summer academic semester.
On April 2, classes were suspended for a week at the university, 130km south of Amman where some 20,000 students are enrolled, after 21-year-old student Osama Duheisat died and several others were injured in clashes between students from different tribes.
Duheisat's death led to riots in his hometown of Faqou in Karak.
Earlier this month, a media consultant at the Higher Education Council (HEC), Mahmoud Khalaileh, said the HEC had amended laws governing the Kingdom's universities, granting campus security units more authority to deal with campus violence through upgrading their status to law enforcement bodies.
The amendments will allow security personnel to enforce laws and arrest whoever violates regulations to prevent the recurrence of campus violence, according to Khalaileh.
The amendments were sent to the Legislation and Opinion Bureau for review.
