Abu Dhabi, April 30th, 2012 (WAM) -- The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City, in conjunction with the Department of Economic Development, has closed a supermarket in Bani Yas area, for failing to refrain from selling the banned Neswar drug, which poses adverse health impacts to users.

Khalifa Mohammed Al Rumaithi, Director of Public Health at the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City, stressed the Municipality's keenness on maintaining the health and safety of the community in keeping with its vision to ensure a superior quality of life and sustainable environment for the residents of Abu Dhabi city. He called for the concerted efforts of the community in combating these negative phenomena violating laws and impacting the public health, safety and environment, besides constituting a flagrant breach of sanitation and public health codes.

"The Municipality will not hesitate to take necessary actions against those found in violation of health stipulations in a way that may be detrimental to the health and safety of the community. If any organization is found involved in trafficking or using any banned, expired substance, substances of unknown source, or containing harmful additives, the Municipality will immediately confiscate it and take appropriate actions against that establishment, which may end up with ordering the closure of the business, cancellation of the trade license, and banning the practice of the activity, besides slapping offenders with hefty fines," said Al Rumaithi.

Al Rumaithi cautioned against exploiting the free market environment to undermine the health of the community, adding that the "Municipality, in collaboration with all partners from the concerned authorities, is tightening the noose on offenders to prevent such practices".

"The Health Control Section at the Public Health Division, is the watchful eye in protecting the consumer's health and the public health of the community, as all staff remain on full alert while monitoring markets to verify the compliance with the rules and regulations of public health."
