Morocco will host a regional summit on Sahel-Saharan security, AFP quoted Moroccan Interior Minister Mohand Laenser as saying on Wednesday (May 9th). Arab Maghreb Union members Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania and Morocco, along with several African Sahel countries, will be invited to attend the as-yet unscheduled event.
"This meeting is necessary and essential, due to the dangerous situation prevailing in that area," Laenser said.
Speaking to parliament earlier this week, the minister noted "the gravity of the situation in the Sahel-Saharan region" as a result of "the fall of the Libyan regime and the situation in Mali".
