Geneva- By ignoring its international obligations, Algeria has transformed Tindouf camps (south-western Algeria) into a "law-free zone" where absolute illegality reigns, said Wednesday Moroccan ambassador & representative to UN office in Geneva, Omar Hilale.
Speaking at the 60th session of executive committee of the UN High commissioner for the refugees (UNHCR), Hilale cited the "2009 World Refugee Survey" which said that Algeria has failed to honor its international responsibilities in the Tindouf camps.
The Survey, which was edited by the US Committee for refugees and Immigrants, unveils the dire and deteriorating human situation prevailing in Algerian Camps, said the Moroccan diplomat.
The latest document, which confirms the serious human rights violations committed in the camps, should incite the UNHCR to act swiftly against these illegal practices, underlined the diplomat, recalling Algeria's refusal to conduct census of Tindouf refugees, embezzlement of humanitarian aid, clampdown on freedom of movement and widespread slavery practices in Algerian camps.
The world refugees report confirms Algerian violation of international law and rights of the refugees, UN Assembly resolutions, Universal Declaration of Human rights and Geneva Convention, said the Moroccan ambassador.
