MUSCAT -- The German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) is hosting Public Evening Lecture on the theme, 'GIS component of Oman National Spatial Strategy -- Information and Knowledge Base for Planning in Oman' on at 7.30 pm on Monday, May 28, at its Airport Campus.
The presenters are Manfred Schrenk, Managing Director of CEIT ALANOVA -- Department for Urbanism, Transport, Environment and Information Society and Vice-President of the International Society of City and Regional Planners; and Dr Stefan Kollarits, Managing Director of PRISMA solutions, Austria.
The Oman National Spatial Strategy (ONSS) is the project for defining the Oman National Spatial Strategy, which is an ongoing project under the leadership of SCTP (Supreme Committee of Town Planning).
Within its intended project duration of 38 months it aims to design the Spatial Planning Strategy for the
Sultanate of Oman, to prepare and develop further a National Planning Geo Information System, to propose the procedures, instruments and boards for legal and administrative framework of spatial planning and to build capacity in spatial data management and spatial planning in Oman.
After a short introduction to the ONSS project, the evening presentation will focus on the role of GIS within the ONSS project, especially the current status of GIS in Oman, the GIS process in ONSS project (GI workshop series for stakeholder involvement), crucial issues for long-term use of ONSS GIS (eg data responsibility, information exchange, data modelling and standardisation) and the status of implementation -- phase 1.
Stefan Kollarits is a geographer (University of Salzburg) and spatial planner (Vienna University of Technology).
After a position as assistant lecturer in the 1990s he founded PRISMA solutions in 1999, a European technology leader in the field of GIS with currently 50 employees.
His major research interests are in the field of bringing GIS and e-Government technology to the field of transportation and the introduction of co-operative GI applications for the public sector. Manfred Schrenk was trained as spatial planner at Vienna University of Technology and assistant lecturer at the university in the 1990s.
He has been organising the CORP conference series since 1996, which attracts more than 500 international spatial planners every year. Schrenk is the managing director of CEIT (Central European Institute of Technology) since 2006.
Among his numerous international activities he is Vice-President and Treasurer of ISO-CARP, the international planner association. With CEIT he is actively involved in several research projects on the European and national level, with a focus of innovative GIS use in spatial planning and related fields.
