Al Ain, March. 13th, 2006 (WAM) -- The Zayed Centre for Heritage and History in conjcuntion with the Emirates Heritage Club in Al Ain organised here last night a lecture on the use of free verse in poetry.

Dr. Abdulwahed Loloaa, Cultural Counselor at the Executive Office of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai delivered a lecture under the theme: The use free verse in poetry and the ongoing mistakes.

Loloaa attributed the origin of free verse to the American Poet, Walt Whitman who published "Leaves of Grass" in 1855.

He said that the idea of free verse reached some of the French poets in the 19th century, then it spread in Europe in the 20th century. He added that famous poets such as T S Eliot, W B Yeats, Wallace Stevens, and many others wrote amazing and famous poems using this kind of art. While in the Arab world, this kind of writing became famous in the 40s of last century. Some of its poets are Jubra Ibrahim Jubra and Tawfiq Sayegh.

At the end of the lecture, Dr. Abdulwahed moted that the levels of poetry writing, even though it is different, creates an atmosphere of optimism.
