A new luxury shopping centre, the Lagoona mall, has opened in Doha's trendy West Bay district.

The 128,000 square metre mall is currently 70 per cent occupied with all of the store space expected to be allocated by the end of the year.

When it is complete the mall will boast 160 retail units, 22 restaurants and a European-style piazza.

Eamon Kelly, the general manager for Lagoona, told the National: "We are catering for a very, very high-end customer. It's not unheard of for people to go into a mall and drop Dh750,000 [US$204,000] on a watch or jewellery."

He added that demand for luxury products such as Rolexes is increasing in Qatar as people travel further afield and see what is on offer.

The mall is located less than 1km from the Pearl-Qatar development which will eventually be home to around 40,000 people, meaning it has a prime location to attract high-end shoppers.
