KUWAIT, Feb 28 (KUNA) -- Kuwait will mark the 28th anniversary of establishing its world-famous towers on Thursday.

Built in March 1979 as Kuwait's key tourist attractions, Kuwait Towers will light 28 candles on the occasion of their 28th festival.

The three Kuwaiti towers take the form of perfume water spraying equipment which Kuwaiti people used in the past in their wedding parties and social occasions.

The idea of establishing the three towers, which overlook the Arab Gulf, was developed by His Highness the late Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah when the Ministry of Electricity and Water needed, at the time, to build mammoth water reservoirs in lieu of old iron ones.

The three Kuwaiti towers have converted from a purely economic project into a tourist and civilizational one that constitutes one of the country's key landmarks through which visitors can watch the whole of Kuwait.

The site of the Kuwaiti towers was chosen for technical and geographical reasons, rather than tourist ones, as it is the highest spot in the country, which makes easy the process of pulling water from the towers' water reservoir into the surrounding area and houses.

It took nearly four years from Kuwait to build its famous towers, which were designed by Sweden and executed by Yugoslavia.

They are one of the most distinct architectural expressions in the Middle East or anywhere else in the world, and a cultural icon and symbol of how geographically small nations can achieve great things. While there are three spheres and three towers, not all of them are for storage.

The first tower is 187 meters tall and contains two different spheres; one for restaurant and cafeterias and the other for watching Kuwait from all directions. The second tower is 147 meters tall. It has a single sphere as a one-million-gallon water reservoir. The third tower is 113 meters and used for lighting.
