KM is an emerging, interdisciplinary business model dealing with all aspects of knowledge within the context of an enterprise, whether government, NGO or commercial, including knowledge creation, codification, sharing, and how these activities promote learning and innovation. In one form or another, knowledge management has been around for a very long time.
Knowledge Management helps organisations to:
Increase their speed to market through the reuse of proven resources and methods
Reduce costly mistakes; and ensure excellent results
Enable rapid absorption and diffusion of new ideas, allowing you to sustain a competitive advantage
IKMI was established by a key contributor to the US Government KM initiative; IKMI Chairman Doug Weidner. Chairman Weidner is a pioneering KM practitioner and is a respected consultant, columnist, speaker and KM Instructor. Prior to founding the KM Institute (2004), he was the Chief Knowledge Engineer and Senior Technical Fellow and consultant for $30B corporation. Northrop Grumman, the largest employer of professionals in the Washington, DC area. He provided Northrop Grumman's KM innovations to clients worldwide, including KM training, assessment/planning, design, and implementation. He has been directly involved in KM since he designed the KBase Tool for US Dept of Defense (DoD), while working at a DoD "think tank".
He has consulted with and mentored KM initiatives for the World Bank, the UN, NASA and many other government agencies and commercial firms. He has trained and advised the US Navy Acquisition Reform Office's (ARO) on its enterprise knowledge management system, as well as KM leaders in most US government agencies. Weidner has served on the US E-Gov's KM Conference Advisory Board since 2000. Weidner developed the Certified Knowledge Manager (CKM and Master CKM) Programmes and has certified hundreds of students worldwide.
