KUWAIT: Minister of Information Mohammad Abu Al-Hassan said on Sunday that his ministry would devise a comprehensive strategy and philosophy for various media in Kuwait. During a meeting with members of the local and foreign press, which was hosted by the Kuwaiti Journalists Association (KJA), Abu Al-Hassan stressed that the media in the country should change its goals and nature to accommodate the new developments. "Our media should acclimatise with the new developments in the region and the world. Our media should focus on the policy of the state," he said. He pointed out that the Kuwaiti media was preoccupied with the issues of security in the country and the region. "But after the overthrow of the former regime in Baghdad, the Kuwaiti media should focus on internal and national issues that reflect the policy of Kuwait. It should get familiarise with the international media in the era of the information revolution," explained the minister.
He stressed that the media strategy should be based on values, traditions and developments in order to correct the wrongs and distorted images that were wrongly associated with the country. "An explosion in information has taken place. We have to adapt to what happened in order to set our own media policy," said Abul Hasan. He added that all countries in the world were subjected to the scrutiny by the media as the whole world has turned into a small village. He informed that his ministry was intending to form joint task teams in associations with the Ministry of Education, Interior, Awqaf, Islamic Affairs and Trade and Industry and other public institutions. He pointed out that the media should not set foreign policies but should accommodate these policies hand in hand with diplomatic missions.
The minister said that it was important to set the proper channels in order to ensure the spread of Kuwaiti media abroad and to highlight the role of its intellectuals.
Talking on various programmes broadcast in Kuwait Television he suggested that there should be more debates programmes, serials and documentaries that link us with our past. He praised the role of Radio Kuwait saying it had a long history and was a pioneer in this field.
"The tourism section in the ministry managed to place Kuwait again on the international tourism map," pointed out the minister.
He commended the role of Kuwait News Agency saying that it managed to overcome the challenges created by the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990 and played a pivotal role in the region and abroad.
