KUWAIT: The deadline for completing work on the First Ring Road project has been set back once again, with a Ministry of Public Works (MPW) official indicating that it won't be finished before the start of 2011, six months after the scheduled date.
The project, which was initially scheduled for completion in December 2009, has faced several problems, including having to reroute the thoroughfare's original path around the Catholic cathedral and an old caf. After resolving these problems, the MPW signed a contract with an international contractor to carry out the work, with the deadline rescheduled for July 1, 2010, reported Al-Watan.
After the contractor indicated that the work would take longer to complete than scheduled, officials from the MPW's roads and maintenance department held a meeting with representatives of the firm, instructing them to complete the work by the newly agreed date or face the contract being voided.
On another issue, the cabinet has asked the MPW to provide explanations for the high costs of work on the Jahra Road expansion project, which has reached KD 264.891 million.
The ministry indicated that the Jahra Road project includes a wide variety of work, including maintenance work on the main and temporary thoroughfares, sewage and rain drainage networks, and electrical cables and lampposts, as well as the installation of traffic lights and planting and irrigation work. The MPW is reportedly planning to launch a publicity campaign to raise public awareness of the reasons for the high cost of the project.
