KUWAIT - French Gastroenterology Consultant Dr Marc Giovannini gave an enlightening talk on advancements in endoscopic treatment of superficial gut cancer at a lecture session organized by the New Mowasat Hospital at Movenpick, Al-Bidaa. The lecture was attended by a large number of doctors and physicians. Dr Giovannini highlighted which lesions can be treated endoscopically, how to diagnose them, through what techniques they can be diagnosed and the possible outcomes of the diagnosis during the talk. Dr Giovannini is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Chief of Endoscopy unit at Paoli-Calmettes in Marseilles, France and is currently on a three-day visit to the New Mowasat Hospital starting Nov 24. He is a pioneer in the field of gastroscopy, colonscopy and ERCP. Dr Giovannini has published more than 200 articles in medical journals and he is the current President of Euro-EUS.

Dr Giovannini's visit is part of the hospital's physician rotation program carried out to offer various treatments in the country including for pancreatitis, pancreatic cysts and tumors, managing biliary obstruction through ERCP, treating gut obstruction, stomach disorders as well as small bowel and colon diseases. Al-Mowasat Hospital has recently established a special unit for Digestive Endoscopy. The unit provides all diagnostic and therapeutic techniques required to diagnose and treat digestive diseases.

These include endoscopic examinations of esophagus, stomach and duodenum, endoscopic examinations of colon, endoscopic therapy for gut bleeding lesions such as bleeding ulcers, vascular anomalies and bleeding varcies using injection therapy, clips, loops, band legation or APC.

The unit also provides treatment to problems such as swallowing difficulty through dilation or inserting stent (tube), extraction of foreign bodies, placement of feeding tubes, removal of polyps and performing endoscopic examinations of biliary and pancreatic system (ERCP) with removal of stones and worms or by-passing obstructions by placing stents. Small Bowel Video Capsule Endoscopy is also currently available at New Mowasat Hospital. The unit uses the latest technology in disinfecting and sterilizing the endoscopes and accessories through a fully automated machine. All procedures are done under conscious sedation according to international protocols. Patients are fully monitored by well experienced staff through and after procedures. The unit also provides services such as inserting different self-expandable metal stents for stomach, small intestine or colon obstruction, measuring gut acidity, and performing endoscopic examinations of biliary.
