Amman - The Jordan Nuclear Regulatory Commission (JNRC) will equip four border crossings with radiation monitoring stations in February to protect the Kingdom from illicit trade of nuclear materials, JNRC Chairman Jamal Sharaf said Saturday.
The US Department of Energy-funded project will cover Karama, Jaber, Jordan-Syria Free Zone and Al Omari border crossings, before adding another four crossings in a later stage, Sharaf told reporters.
He said the scheme is part of the commission's duties to protect the Kingdom from nuclear and radiation materials. Sharaf said the project would be implemented as part of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Jordan and the US last December.
Under the MoU, the US Department of Energy would provide Jordan with technical support and equipment to detect and prevent illegal trade of nuclear and radiation materials. The US side would also provide training for Jordanian border personnel on know-how and maintenance of these equipment.
