AMMAN - Jordan Telecom Group (JTG) on Wednesday launched the Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) technology to enable its customers to access the Internet and other communication services via televisions.
Under an agreement signed between JTG and INTRACOM TELECOM to launch the IPTV in the Kingdom under the Orange brand, the state-of-the-art service employing a broadband connection (ADSL) will be delivered to the public within two-three months, according to a statement received by The Jordan Times.
"The service seeks to enable those who do not have a computer at home to have access to such services as advanced interactive services, including video on demand, personal recording, chatting and e-mail," JTG Chief Executive Officer Mickael Ghossein told reporters at a ceremony to launch the service.
The offering will feature premium Arabic and international content.
"The new technology is part of our efforts and in line with His Majesty King Abdullah's vision to make the Kingdom a technological hub in the region. With Orange IPTV, we are bringing Jordan a service that is very popular in Europe and the world enhancing modern lifestyle and recreational needs of customers," Ghossein said at the presser.
The new service expedites the concept of Internet over TV where subscribers can view IPTV and connect to the internet using their TV set, by utilising a device connected to the TV with a wireless keyboard and mouse.
Tamouh Khauli, vice president and chief executive officer of JTG's Innovations and Corporate Solutions, said that through a highly secured, conditionally accessed infrastructure, the service brings quality, preference, ubiquity, mobility, and personalisation offering its customers a unique interactive experience with a content of their choice, noting that the group has controlled and filtered websites that are in line with "customs and traditions".
INTRACOM TELECOM Managing Director Alexandros Manos said the agreement will enable the firm to further enhance its IPTV projects portfolio, as the scheme is announced in the Middle East for the first time.
