BEIRUT: Since the beginning of the Syrian uprising in March 2011, clashes between the rival Tripoli neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen have killed more than 120 people and wounded hundreds of others.
Although sporadic clashes have been ongoing since 2008 between the hillside, mainly Alawite neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen and the predominantly Sunni area of Bab al-Tabbaneh below it, they have escalated dramatically over the past two years.
June 2011
Erupting on June 17 in the aftermath of pro- and anti-Assad protests in the Tripoli, fighting between the rival neighborhoods leaves seven dead and 59 wounded. The clashes cease as a midnight cease-fire goes into effect.
February 2012
Clashes, lasting two days, break out on Feb. 10, leaving three dead and more than 20 wounded. May 2012Fighting begins on May 12 and persists for several days. At least seven and as many as 11 people are killed and more than 100 wounded.
June 2012
At least 14 are killed and scores wounded when violence erupts over the first weekend in June. August 2012At least 17 people die in fighting that begins Aug. 23 and continues through Aug. 27. More than 120 are wounded, including at least 10 soldiers and one foreign journalist.
September 2012
Gunfire is exchanged and hand grenades are thrown between the restive neighborhoods Sept. 24-25, but no deaths or injuries are reported.
October 2012
Clashes that begin in the aftermath of the assassination of Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hasan in Beirut on Oct. 19 result in the deaths of 10 and the wounding of 65.
December 2012
Beginning on Dec. 4 – after news broke that 21 Lebanese fighters had been killed in Syria – and persisting for a week, clashes leave 17 dead and at least 77 wounded.
January 2013
Exchange of gunfire in the aftermath of Assad’s speech on Jan. 7 is contained by the Army. March 2012Clashes from March 21-24 leave 12 dead and 25 wounded.
April 2013
On April 8, sporadic gunfire erupts and hand grenades are thrown after a resident of Jabal Mohsen is beaten in the mainly Sunni Abi Samra neighborhood of Tripoli.
On April 22 nearly 3,000 people take part in a peace rally in the city.
May 2013
Weeklong fighting that began May 21 as the Syrian regime launched a Hezbollah-backed offensive on the town of Qusair just across the border leaves at least 29 dead and more than 200 wounded.
