Chairman Senate of Pakistan Syed Nayyer Hussain Bukhari said here Monday Iran and Pakistan could play an important role in establishing peace and stability in the region.

Bukhari said this during a meeting with Ala'eddin Boroujerdi, Chairman of National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian Islamic Parliament who called on him.

Chairman of Pakistan's Senate on the occasion called for stronger economic ties between the Islamic Republic and Pakistan.

He referred to his visit of Iran and said that he had a fruitful meeting with Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

While praising the steadfastness of the Iranian people and the government he said that the Iranians are a brave nation.

Bukhari referred to the strong bonds of relations existing between Iran and Pakistan expressing opinion that the two countries have many commonalities. "They are brotherly Muslim countries that share common borders and culture," he said.

The Pakistani Senate Chairman was of the view that the two countries have much potential that can be utilized for the betterment of their people.

He also urged the need to expedite the barter trade deal on wheat between Iran and Pakistan.

Touching upon the significance of Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project, the Senate chairman expressed hope that it would be completed on time to help Pakistan overcome its energy shortage.

On Afghanistan issue, Bukhari said that Pakistan believed in an Afghan-owned solution to the problem. He said that the trilateral cooperation among Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan were imperative in establishing durable peace and stability in Afghanistan.

He said that direct flights from Mashad and Islamabad must be launched to facilitate the Shi'a pilgrims of northern Pakistan.

Chairman National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran, Ala'eddin Boroujerdi, during the meeting highlighted the significance of strong Iran-Pakistan relation in bringing peace and stability in the region.

He stressed the need for exploiting the trade potential between the two neighboring states to the maximum possible level.

He said that after returning to Tehran he would hold a meeting of Iranian parliamentarians to discuss ways to further boost Iran-Pakistan relationship in all sectors.

Boroujerdi said that Iran and Pakistan should enhance their cooperation in defense sector and the military leadership of the two countries should meet to enhance this cooperation.

He was of the view that the upcoming visit of the Iranian defense minister to Pakistan could play an important role in this regards.

The Iranian Chairman of Parliament's National Security Commission said that soon Iran would increase legal entry points at Iran-Pakistan border.

Ala'eddin Boroujerdi said that Pakistan has always played an important role on world issues.

He said that Iran is worried about the future of Afghanistan after the withdrawal of foreign forces.

He noted that from past few years the Zionist regime has been facing humiliating defeat from the Muslims of Palestine.

Members of Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Esma'eili, Ali Reza Ayyari, Iranian Ambassador to Islamabad Alireza Haqiqian and Pakistani Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Defense & Defense Production were also present in the meeting.
