DUBAI, UAE: Head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) said here on Sunday that domestic shipping firms will transport 50 percent of the country's compressed natural gas (CNG) and petrochemicals from 2010.
Mohammad Hossein Dajmar told IRNA that the project would require 155 special vessels.
"Domestic companies and shipping lines would handle half of the country's gas and petrochemical transportation affairs by 2010," he said, adding that a company has been established with the purchase of six new vessels for exporting chemicals from the country.
He said the national shipping lines' cargo capacity is expected to increase from the current 50,000 containers to 150,000 containers by end of 2008.
The IRISL announced earlier that it is in talks with a giant Iranian industrial group on the construction of several multipurpose vessels.
Jalil Khobreh, managing director of Iran's Marine Industries Firm (Sadra), said once the talks are finalized, a relevant deal will be signed, adding that the company is already building several ships for Iranian and foreign companies.
"At present, we are constructing three 63,000-ton oil tankers for the National Iranian Oil Tanker Company, three ships for Naft Khazar Company and four ocean liners for a German firm," he said, expressing hope that the company would manage to build the ships on schedule.
He said that Venezuela has also ordered four ships, adding that a contract has yet to be signed in this respect.
The official said Sadra has received an order for building 10 LPG carriers for a European company, stressing that the project will be implemented once the European firm finds the required markets for procuring its LPG needs. He said Sadra trains specialized Iranian workforce, adding that it provides training facilities for students majoring in marine industries.
