Lebanon’s Saccal Enterprises, part of the Saccal Group, has been awarded the contract for the mechanical and electrical refurbishment work on Beirut’s Salim Salam Tunnel by the project’s main contractor Al Jihad for Commerce & Contracting, a senior official said on Friday.

Tackling the high pollution levels at the Salim Salam Tunnel has been a high priority for the Beirut municipality, according to Nasser Abu-Ltaif, business development director at Saccal Enterprises.

“Out of the top local MEP [mechanical, electrical and plumbing] contractors that applied for the project, we were the only ones awarded the tender,” Abu-Ltaif told Zawya in an email on Friday.

The work will take place in two stages: the tunnel ventilation system will be upgraded first, to provide more fresh air for users, while the tunnel’s lighting control and monitoring system will be improved.

Renovation of the 33-year-old tunnel will resume in February 2018 and will take 12 months to complete.
