MUSCAT: Hewlett-Packard (HP), the largest technology and solutions provider, yesterday announced the launch of full-fledged commercial operations in the Sultanate, with the formal inauguration of its office located at Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM).

In the operations for the past six years as a representative office, HP also unveiled expansion plans which will see investments in the current year and the next few years.

Addressing the media here, Santiago Cortes, vice-president and managing director of HP (Middle East, Mediterranean & Africa) said that the company with the support of government of Oman and especially the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, HP has been able to set up full operations in Oman.

"Oman has all the potential in IT segment and we believe company will adopt innovation as a catalyst for business growth in this country," he added.

"We look forward to a more sustained and deeper involvement with our new office to enhance our market presence and contribute to the development of the local workforce in the country. At HP, we are committed to working with the government, businesses and our partners in Oman to develop a stronger and more innovative knowledge based economy in Oman by using our world class solutions and innovative approach," the HP top official explained.

Through its new operational base in Oman, HP will now be able to offer a higher level of sales, services and support capabilities to better serve the vibrant IT sector in Oman. HP has been active and present in Oman over the past six years and is now looking to significantly expand its operations and make additional investments in the country.

Strategic partner

For Dr Salim Al Ruzaiqi, CEO of Information Technology Authority (ITA), Oman, HP's full operations was a glad tidings as he said, "It signals a good sign for the growth of IT in Oman with the coming of HP in a big way. We look forward to have HP as a strategic partner in many upcoming projects."

"At ITA, we have been focused on creating a successful knowledge-based economy by developing Oman's information and communications technology sector as part of the country's ambitious economic diversification plan," Dr Salim Al Ruzaiqisaid. C2

Earlier, in his opening remarks, Eyad Shihabi, Managing director and enterprise business lead of HP (Middle East), said, "because of the brand support, we have achieved a high percentage of growth in Oman and our focus is on providing over-all solutions. In the coming months, more people, more resources will be added and we will be working on a number of programmes with the universities here in Oman."

Eyad said HP will bring in innovations in Oman market. "Until now, we have a staff of 12 personnel and in the next 15 months, we will augment the staff strength to 50. Our market share is more than 50 per cent in many areas of information technology."

Mohamed Al Maskary, director-general of Knowledge Oasis Muscat who was also present on the occasion said, "Over the years, we have been successful in establishing KOM as an international hub of business excellence. HP's presence here is further endorsement of the excellent infrastructure and support we have been able to provide to attract a diverse array of International, regional and domestic businesses."
