Hormuzgan province has high potentials for shrimp breeding in light of its 1,400 km of coastal areas stretching from Jask Port to Parsian City, said the director general of Hormuzgan Fisheries Organization.

Qodrat Mirzadeh added that shrimp production plays a great role in boosting the local economy and generating jobs, IRIB reported.

"This southern province boasts over 50,000 hectares of potential lands for the production of 88,000 tons of shrimp and 13 centers for reproduction of shrimp larvae," he said.

The official said promotion of aquatic exports, earning forex revenues, optimum exploitation of seawater and salty lands, productive employment, decline in migration of villagers to cities, as well as economic, social and cultural development of deprived regions are advantages of shrimp breeding.

"Currently, about 98 farms breed shrimp in 2,553 hectares," he said.

Meanwhile, Ali Karimi, the deputy head of Hormuzgan Fisheries Department for aquatic breeding, said 2,710 tons of shrimp were bred across provincial farms in the last Iranian year (ended March 20, 2013).

Karimi put the economic value of shrimps at 305 billion rials.

"Apart from selling the cultured shrimps in the markets of Hormuzgan, Isfahan, Shiraz, Tehran and Mashhad, they are also exported to UAE, Spain, Egypt and Vietnam," he said.

"Using new species, such as 'vannamei', will revive shrimp breeding."

Katimi said currently, 17 shrimp breeding factories are active across the province.
