Muscat: More than 60 Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (Scada) experts discussed and explored the designs of Scada systems for business process improvement in Oman at a workshop held here yesterday.

Scada, which is a type of industrial control system used to monitor and control facilities and infrastructure in the industries, has become increasingly relevant as there has been a trend towards its integration with corporate IT.

Jim Baker, principal Scada engineer, Water Corporation Australia, in his opening remarks, said that technology is changing as it has made wonderful advances in various fields.

"It is time we keep pace with these changes," he added.

Dharmesh Gohel, manager (Technical support) at Iconics India, along with Amit Bharadva, assistant manager (Technical support) at Iconics India presented an overview on 'Visualising, analysing and mobilising -- Getting connected to the future -- An insight from Iconics.'

Speaking on 'Understanding Oman Gas Company's Scada system strategy,' Ahmed Al Harrasi, head of the Scada Control and Automation Support, Oman Gas Company (OGC), said, "The OGC, a major gas transportation company in Oman delivering natural gas through 2,500km long pipeline across the country, needs centralised Scada. It is to connect diverse control systems for multiple pipelines to one common Scada platform and for real time supervision, monitoring and high level control of all OGC facilities from a Central Control Centre, besides many other advantages."

The conference, organised by the IQPC (International Quality & Productivity Centre) and GEC (Global Exhibitions & Conferences), was attended by automation, control, telecommunication, distribution, transmission and IT professionals from the oil and gas, power and water sectors from around the region.
