Tunisia - The total electricity production dipped 3% in 2022 to 19,516 GWh, excluding consumed self-production, reads the monthly report on the energy situation published Thursday by the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy.

Production for the domestic market, however, edged up by 5%, following the rise in imports. Hence, Algeria's power purchase covered over 12% of the domestic market's needs.

The Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (STEG) still holds the lion's share of electricity production with a 96% share of national production by 2022. Power generated from natural gas (STEG + IPP) fell by 2%. The generation of power from renewable energy sources stood at 1.9% (taking into account the production of power plants only).

Electricity sales surged 5% between 2021 and 2022. High voltage sales fell 5% whereas those of medium voltage posted a 5% rise.

Manufacturers remain the major consumers with 60% of high and medium voltage demand in 2022.

The majority of sectors saw their power purchase edge up, mainly tourism (+51%) and textile and clothing (+6%).
