Egypt has won membership of the Council of the International Maritime Organization after getting the second with 135 votes out of 159 valid votes, according to a statement by the Egyptian Transport Ministry.

The Council held a meeting in London to elect the 40 member states to the IMO Council for the 2022-2023 term.

The IMO Council serves as the “executive organ” responsible for supervising the work of the international shipping regulator and performs almost all functions of the IMO Assembly, with exception of making recommendations to Governments on maritime safety and pollution prevention.

Egypt has held its seat on the Council since 1977, within the framework of the Ministry of Transport’s strategy which was very keen to follow up on this file overcoming any obstacles.

Despite the circumstances of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Egypt was able to achieve this honorable success, which benefits Egypt’s maritime network at the international level.

The International Maritime Organization is one of the specialized agencies of the United Nations that regulates and legislates marine activities and aims to preserve the environment and facilitate global trade.

Egypt is very keen to actively participate in all its main and subsidiary committees, in addition to its executive board.

The Egyptian delegation participating in the organization’s council elections was headed by Rear Admiral Reda Ahmed Ismail, Head of the Maritime Transport Sector.
