MUSCAT -- Al Hassan Engineering Company SAOG (AHEC) has signed a multi-million rial contract with the Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW) for the construction of Phase 1 of the Emergency Water Storage Reservoirs Project in the Muscat Governorate. PAEW is overseeing the development of a network of a number of emergency storage reservoirs located at strategic sites around the capital region. This backup network will be automatically deployed in the event of a supply crisis or a technical breakdown in the Muscat Water Supply Scheme, which currently serves the capital city.
An emergency water reservoir network conceived out of PAEW's contingency planning for the Muscat Governorate, following the adverse weather events of June 2007. Furthermore, the emergency storage network is also intended to keep the city well supplied in the event of any disruption in operations at the Ghubrah and Barka desalination plants, which meet much of Muscat's potable water demand. In 2009, PAEW commissioned the internationally renowned consultancy firm, Sogreah, to undertake the detailed design of the emergency water reservoir network for the Muscat Governorate.
The scope of work for AHEC includes building of six emergency water reservoirs at four locations in the capital region -- Qurum, Ruwi, Al Wadi al Kabir and Wattayah. Qurum will host the biggest of the reservoirs with two units each with a storage capacity of 73,000 cubic metres. Ruwi will have one reservoir with a capacity of 25,000 cubic metres, at Al Wadi al Kabir there will be two reservoirs each of a capacity of 15,000 cubic metres and a similar sized reservoir will also be constructed at Wattayah.
In addition to the construction of the Reinforced Concrete covered ground level reservoirs Emergency Water Storage Reservoirs, AHEC will also build associated infrastructure such as access roads, guard houses, pump systems, tanker filling stations, and connections to the local supply grid. "We are extremely happy to have successfully secured from PAEW this contract which is strategically of national importance.
This success is particularly valued by us as it builds on our ongoing and successful diversification strategy which took us into the Water and Wastewater sector from 2008 with the award of the Civil & Architectural Works for A'Seeb Sewage Treatment Plant," Peter Hall, CEO of AHEC said.
He added, "The Emergency Water Reservoirs Project adds to a number of recent wins in the Water & Wastewater sector. Recently in UAE, we have secured two contracts from the prestigious client GASCO. The first contract is for Replacement of a Potable Water Tank while the second contract is an EPC contract for rehabilitation and upgradation of the existing sewage network facilities of GASCO's Buhasa Plant, 200 km to the west of Abu Dhabi."
Over last three decades, AHEC which is an ISO 9001:2008 certified company has established an excellent track record of being a prime EPC contractor and construction partner in executing complex jobs in the Oil and Gas, Petrochemicals, Power Plants, Electricity Transmission and Distribution, Industrial infrastructure projects and Maintenance of Oil and Gas and Power installations, Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants.
The Emergency Water Reservoir order adds further to the AHEC healthy current order book which includes a number of major projects under varying stages of construction; Zauliyah Depletion Compression Project for PDO, Saih Nihayda Depletion Compression Project for PDO/GS E&C, Amal HRSG Project for PDO, Long Term Power Supply Project for Occidental Mukhaizna, Civil and Building Works for Barka-3 IPP, A'Seeb Sewage Treatment Plant for Haya Water/Hyundai Rotem, Civil works for a 400 kV Grid Sub-station for Siemens in Shuwaihat and Civil and Building Works for GASCO Asab-3 Project for Technip in Abu Dhabi.
