Muscat:  A clear message to the business community to adopt green and sustainability trend in its business practices was the message that was aptly reflected in the opening of the Oman's premier eco-friendly exhibition, 'Gulf Eco 2013.'

The event was inaugurated yesterday by Shaikh Saad bin Mohammed bin Said Al Mardhouf  Al Saadi, Minister of Sports Affairs at the Oman International Exhibition Centre, in the presence of representatives from various ministries.

Taking green activities of some public and private sector companies can provide much needed encouragement for more green-worthy initiatives to be taken up by these two sectors this year.

Speaking to Times Business J.K. Salvi, vice-president (Business development and tendering), Galfar engineering and contracting, which has out up  stall at the expo said, "Every three months we organise environment awareness campaign for construction workers aimed at reminding the employees of simple measures to be taken in their day-to-day activities that will have a positive impact on the environment."

Nabil Al Lawaty of PDO asserted, "The EcOman Centre is  a gift to the Nation by PDO  to mark the 40th National Day of Oman in 2010. It is an engaging journey through the evolution and future of energy and aims to help visitors understand the possibilities of harnessing sustainable energy resources.

It also underlines the company's strong commitment to society and sustainable development. The Centre has three theme areas: the Power Tower, Energy Journey and Better World." Faiza of The Office for Conservation of the Environment (OCE) at the Diwan of Royal Court said that they are engaged in seven projects and actively working on Protected Areas.

Abdullah Mohammed Al Jabri of Omifco said that they are committed to the implementations of all regulations of the local authorities and investors  concerning the environment. Organised by OITE Trade Fairs, under the patronage of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, the Gulf Eco Exhibition 2013 has stalls representing  key stakeholders in the oil and gas industry, banking sector, petrochemicals and manufacturing sector, with focus being given to companies highlighting environmental services and solutions. Lead Sponsor, Haya Water is also showcasing wastewater management solutions at the event.

Along with the presence of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, the Gulf Eco Exhibition 2013 includes representation from the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health as well as representation from the Research Council, Information Technology Authority, Oman Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Sultan Qaboos University and the Environment Society of Oman.

Present among the exhibitors are premium names like Global Engineering Services (GES), Oman cement Co., GuTech,   NGOs like Clean Up Oman (CUO) and Environment Society of Oman (ESO).

The expo lay stress on energy efficient practices being the need of the hour at both individual level and organisation level.  An official at the expo said that sustainable energy policy is built on the twin foundations of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

An official at the stall put up by Port of Sohar said, "It is the vision of Sohar Industrial Port Company (SIPC) and Sohar Freezone to create, and maintain, an Industrial Complex that is healthy, safe, secure and environmentally friendly for the industries, its employees, visitors and the surrounding population and nature. Good operational practices of the activities within the Port and Freezone Area ensure the protection of human life and health, the natural environment and the property in and around the SIP-area."
