Device will run on Google software

Dubai Taiwanese firm BenQ is set to launch its new tablet PC in the Middle East in the first quarter of next year as it seeks to diversify and boost its market share and growth, said Adrian Chang, president of BenQ Asia Pacific Corporation.

The device — with a Samsung processor at its core — will boast a 10.1-inch touch-screen and rely on Google software. It will also support WiFi and 3G technologies. The product is expected to be ready by December and available in the UAE by the first quarter of next year.

Chang chose to keep the price of the new offering and other details under wraps.

More and more players in the industry are focusing on the tablet PC as there is a huge demand for this segment regionally.

“We have been in this space before in a way with our MID devices. These were portable and during the development process for these devices we launched an application development team. They are still in place, so it will be easy for us to continue application development,” he said.

Educational focus

Manish Bakshi, General Manager of BenQ for the Middle East and Africa, identified the education sector as crucial to the company’s plans in the region. “In the Middle East and Africa region we see a huge potential for technology that enhances the learning experience of a tech-savvy generation. Increasingly we are seeing schools shift from traditional to digital resources using laptops and projectors. Gitex is an effective platform from which to showcase BenQ’s range of innovative products that will transform classrooms across the Middle East.”

Chang said the company’s foray into medical electronic equipment was part of its diversification strategy.
