Baghdad - Al-Iraqiya lawmaker, Lubna Rahim said on Tuesday that her list has nominated her to take over the Ministry of State in the new government.

Rahim told AKnews in a statement that al-Iraqiya List has nominated her as the first woman from the list for the post of Secretary of State.

The list had previously nominated a man for the position but the nomination was rejected by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and the committee assigned to evaluate the ministerial candidacies.

"The prime minister asked al-Iraqiya leader Ayad Allawi to propose a female candidate for the post of Secretary of State so the list nominated my name," Rahim continued.

Fellow female al-Iraqiya deputy, Wehda al-Jumaili told AKnews recently that excluding women from the cabinet would de a dangerous precursor that risked repetition in future administrations.

Female lawmakers in Iraq hold 83 seats in the 325-seat parliament.

Government officials faced staunch criticism from the women's parliamentary bloc on December 21 last year when the Iraqi parliament gave a vote of confidence to a 42-member cabinet that included just one woman.
