Beirut (APD) - Revenues of SyriaTel Mobile Telecom, one of the country's two mobile phone operators, made up 1.7% of Syria's gross domestic product in 2005, the London-based Asharq AlAwsat reported Friday.
Syria achieved $23.8 billion in GDP last year, recording a real growth of 2.6% over 2004.
"Fees paid by SyriaTel to the government amounted to 3% of fiscal revenues," Rami Makhlouf, board chairman of SyriaTel, said at the company's AGM Thursday.
By end of 2005, the company had reached a penetration rate of 9.43% in the country with an estimated population of 19 million. The number of mobile subscribers reached 1.68 million, with SyriaTel enjoying a market share of 53.4%. [TS]
