Fourth major package awarded in last year for Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone
Abu Dhabi Ports Company today announced the award of an AED 1.208 billion (USD 329m) contract to Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co. Ltd for its flagship Khalifa Port & Industrial Zone (KPIZ) project.
The agreement includes project management, design, procurement, construction, testing and commissioning of all civil works associated with the construction of the Offshore Terminal Area consisting of a 1000m semi automated container terminal and a 1400m Break bulk / general cargo terminal intended to handle the operations of 2 million TEUs (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units) of containers and 9 million tons of general cargo as an initial capacity. Work is due to begin immediately and is scheduled for completion by Q4 2012 to facilitate the commencement of port operations in 2012.

Highlights of the contract include:
Over 2400m of quay wall capping beam and associated furniture such as marine fenders, ladders and bollards.
Filling and grading for entire offshore area, comprising of 275 hectares, including the filling at the rear of the capping beam in the container terminal, break bulk areas and selected fill under roads and paving.
Heavy duty pavement for the entire area include all striping and final markings.
Detail design and construction of a diesel fueling facility, five storage warehouses and a 2 storey maintenance and repair building for a 2.5 million TEU container terminal with all supporting structures including tyre storage and repair , welding bay, paint shop and hazardous storage and wash bay.
Construction of 23 ancillary buildings and associated structures including fifteen 11/0.4 kV substations, switching stations, access gates, reefer wash and canopies.
A 3km dual carriageway and associated street lighting, signage and marking.
Provision of site-wide utilities including electrical, drainage, sewerage, potable water, and telecoms.
Supply and installation of all crane rails and necessary ancillaries for the cranes such as crane storm anchorages and funnel pits. The procurement of quay cranes and automated stacking cranes is being performed by ADPC and is excluded from the scope of this contract.
Supporting Infrastructure and passive system components for the installation of "Port Special Systems" which is to be carried out under different contract.
Fencing and Associated Security systems.
Located midway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the Taweelah industrial district, KPIZ will commence operations in 2012 and over the long term to 2030 will comprise 420 square kilometers of prime industrial land organized into vertically integrated clusters for aluminium, steel, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, life sciences, food and beverages, glass, paper and other major sectors.
It will consist of a new, world-class multi-purpose offshore port and one of the largest integrated industrial zones in the world.
KPIZ is a feature of the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030 and will play a major role in the emirate's industrial and economic diversification by serving as a key hub for large scale industrial investments serviced by a world class port, transport and other facilities.
Phase 1 of Khalifa Port will open in Q4, 2012, replacing Abu Dhabi's existing main port of Mina Zayed. The new port will have an initial capacity of 2 million TEUs (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units), of containers and 9 million tons of general cargo.
The dedicated EMAL berth will be operational later this year.
When all phases of Khalifa Port are completed, it will have a capacity of 15 million TEU's of containers and 35 million tons of general cargo.
The three previous contracts announced over the last 12 months by ADPC have been:
July 27th, 2010: AED 1.028 billion building works contract to ED Zublin AG and Al Jaber Transport & General Contracting for the detailed design, construction, fit-out, testing and commissioning of the offshore port's civil and structural building works.
June 13, 2010: AED 350 million (US $95.29 million) to Al Jaber GIS JV for the detailed design, procurement, integration and installation of the control systems throughout the onshore and offshore areas of Khalifa Port including a Port Operating System; a Vessel Traffic System; Security; CCTV; Telephony and communications; and all associated fiber optic and control system cabling.
March 31, 2010: AED 300 million (USD 80+ million) to Larsen & Toubro for its flagship project at Khalifa Port & Industrial Zone (KPIZ) in Taweelah. The contract involves the design, construction, testing and commissioning of the electrical medium voltage (MV) power supply via a 33 kV power cable network and three 33kV / 11kV primary distribution substations which will provide the main power supply for the entire phase-IA of Khalifa port. It also involves the construction of civil buildings with utilities such as air conditioning, fire protection and lighting systems.

July 2009: AED 1.4 billion project to Al Habtoor Leighton Group for construction of on-shore port facilities, including 47 buildings, road networks, bridges, utility installations and landscaping. Completion scheduled for 2011.
