Dubai - The 2nd World Green Economy Summit (WGES) will take place on 22-23 April 2015 at the Dubai International Exhibition and Convention Centre under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. WGES 2015 is hosted by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) under the umbrella of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy in collaboration with World Climate Ltd. Held under the theme 'Global Partnerships, Sustainable Future,' the summit supports the UAE Vision 2021 and the National Agenda to promote sustainable development for a sustainable and secure future for everyone.
This year's summit discusses green economy achievements in the UAE and the world, and promotes international partnerships to achieve a sustainable economy. The programme for WGES 2015 focuses on developing the topics and ideas that were discussed during the World Summit of Regions for Climate in Paris last year, the United Nations Framework Convention on climate change, the laws and regulation related to climate change and leadership in the field of climate change. WGES will also highlight the key role played by young people in driving change, the importance of partnerships between the public and private sectors, and initiatives around funding innovation and solutions.
"In line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, we are organising the second World Green Economy Summit under the theme 'Global Partnerships, Sustainable Future,' to establish Dubai's as a global hub for green economy. This summit underlines the international position and leading role of Dubai and its quest towards adopting future opportunities and promising projects that have established green practices and have become a regional and global role model," said His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, MD & CEO of DEWA, and President of WGES 2015.
"To promote the position of Dubai as a global hub for trade, finance, tourism, and sustainability, and a global role model for energy efficiency and increasing the share of renewable energy, we work to achieve the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 to reduce energy demand by 30% by 2030 and increase the percentage of renewable energy in the energy mix to 7% by 2020 and 15% by 2030, while we review percentages of other energy sources," added Al Tayer.
"WGES 2015 will serve as a global platform that will bring together key green economy leaders, key figures, and prominent speakers to discuss best practices for sustainable development in the Middle East and North Africa," added Al Tayer.
Last year, WGES was highly praised at the regional and global levels for its discussions and topics. It was attended by over 1,100 delegates including thought leaders, and green economy pioneers and experts. The outcome of last year's WGES confirmed Dubai's commitment to become a hub for green economy. The most prominent of these outcomes was the Dubai Declaration which included recommendations and steps for the Emirate to enhance efforts and achieve its objectives to transform into a green economy.
