The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) plans to organise awareness programmes at different institutions in Dhofar governorate this week.

Hilal al Siyabi, media and consumer affairs manager at TRA, said, "The programmes will start this week and will fully utilise TRA's participation in Salalah Tourism Festival by spreading awareness among people in the governorate of Dhofar."

The authority, which is participating in the Salalah Tourism Festival for the fourth time, recently organised a workshop on approving electronic communications equipment at the OCCI branch in Salalah.

The workshop on 'Type approval' introduced systems adopted by TRA in approving communication devices and their quality. It discussed the procedures, rules and applications procedures to be followed for getting electronic devices approved.

"The new system is aimed at facilitating procedures for users of communications devices by enabling them to follow transactions online. It also sends an SMS and e-mail when the transactions are complete."

"The system enables users to carry out 21 different transactions that include registration of companies dealing in communications and renewing their registration, requesting quality approval for telecommunication devices, as well as getting permission for importing telecommunication devi-ces from outside the sultanate," Zadjali added.

Siyabi said, "We are mainly focusing on three main areas this time the latest awareness campaign launched on April 23 titled 'My number...my identity,' and customer service that enables consumers to submit complaints about any telecommunications services provider.

"The third is quality checking of telecommunications devices, for which purpose the workshop on type approval was held."

"The workshop addressed telecom dealers in Salalah to spread the message. An evaluation will be carried out at the end of the festival to check the level of penetration," Siyabi said.
